As you guys know, we don't typically post reviews here on the website, and this is mostly because Tom and I rarely have time to read books outside of the actual book club. However, we'd love to feature reviews from you, our audience!
If you think you'd like to submit a book review for the blog, head over to the Reviews FAQ and learn more! We think this will be a great way to highlight other books as well as highlighting the talented writers we have in our very own community!
We are very excited to show you the cover art for the Sword & Laser Anthology! Created by artist Cliff Nielsen, each globe within this crazy storage center is a self-contained world. This is how we think of the Anthology itself: twenty worlds that you can easily lose yourself within.
So yes, this means we are almost ready to send the Anthology out into the world! Just wrapping up a few tiny edits, waiting on some blurbs, and then it will be out into the universe! We hope you love it as much as we loved putting it together.
We all had a blast, and we hope to do more meet-ups in the future (and not just in San Francisco). Thanks again for coming!
We are wrapped on Season 2! We shot twelve episodes over three days, so needless to say.... we are pooped. But the important thing is that we have twelve amazing Author Spotlights in the can, and we can't wait to share them with you!
So stay tuned! Edits are going to start this week, and we should have the first episode rolling out in Feb. Remember, it's all thanks to you wonderful Kickstarter fans, and we are eternally grateful!
If you're in the Bay Area, please come join me and Tom at Borderlands Books on January 20th at 5pm. We'll be reading selections from the Anthology, discussing the current book pick (TBD), and then heading across the street for adult libations afterwards!
The event is free, but we'll have plenty of copies of the February book pick on hand to purchase. Plus, Borderlands is awesome, and you won't be able to leave the store empty-handed!
If you plan on attending, please RSVP on the Goodreads event page! Hope to see you there!
That's right, we have only 3 days left on the Kickstarter! It has been an amazing month, and we can't wait to bring Season 2 to you guys!
But we are still trying to reach our second stretch goal, and we have some big things planned... including getting a certain someone to speak! Can you guess who?
We added a few new reward levels, in case you missed them:
$60 - A Sword and Laser stein.
Suitable for filling with mead or romulan ale! (plus the DIRK & HEAT RAY and KNIFE & MASER level rewards).
$60 - Sword and Laser Kindle case or sleeve.
Put your Kindle in a case that shows off your a member of the world's greatest SciFi and Fantasy book club! (plus the DIRK & HEAT RAY and KNIFE & MASER level rewards)
$75 - USB Drive with all the audio and video episodes of Sword and Laser!
(plus the DIRK & HEAT RAY and KNIFE & MASER level rewards).
So if you haven't pitched in yet, or want to raise your reward level, now is the time!! Thank you!
Hey all. If you're going to be at DragonCon this weekend in Atlanta, come see the show live!
We'll be sitting down with author Jim Butcher for an hour of conversation and questions from the audience. (See the Author question section to submit a question for the show!)
The show is Saturday August 31 at 2:30 PM IN the Marriott Room A601-A602
And the word is we will have t-shirts and bookmarks. Yay!
Hope to see you there!
After many months of reading, arguing, fighting, blood oaths, sacrificing to the gods of literature, shoot-outs at dawn, etc... we have picked our twenty selections for the Official Sword & Laser Anthology!
If you have received an email from us, congrats! If you have not (by the time of this blog posting) then you didn't make this round. But let us just say that this task was nearly impossible, considering the amazing talent and writing skills that so many of you exhibited with your submissions. We are truly awed by all of you, thank you.
Also thanks to our crew of intrepid submission readers, including Josh, CJ, Becca and Aaron. The final judgments came down from Tom and me, so please direct all of your hate mail to us specifically ;)
Again, I can't stress enough how difficult it has been to make these choices. We all became very protective over our favorites!
If you want to discuss more, please head over to Goodreads. Congrats again to our anthology contributors!
Patrick Hester from SFSignal was nice enough to have Tom on the excellent (and Hugo-nominated!) SF Signal podcast this week. we had a fun time talking about what you'd expect, science fiction and fantasy, and a few things you might not expect!
Get the episode here.
Wow. That was a more exciting election since Iran's last week. We even got insinuations of voter fraud! We've made it!
Neither is a perfect choice for everyone. We've done Mr. Scalzi's books as a main pick recently and as an alternate book previously so he's had lots of coverage. on the other hand there does not seem to be a legit ebook of Ringwolrd (there are print copies and audio copies) which is a deal killer for some.
So here's what the electoral commission has decided. Ringworld got the most votes. It's our pick for July. But for the first time since before we went to a strict monthly schedule, we will have an OFFICIAL alternate pick. The votes were just too damn close.
So get out there and read whichever one you like. I'll be diving into both and I know Veronica already has read Redshirts.
And remember no book pick is ever going to please everyone in this club. It's not meant to. It's meant to expose you to books you might not pick up otherwise. And if you're grumbling about not having an ebook, remember the people who often grumble that the book is not in the library and they don't have ereaders. We're all in this together.
Now go enjoy some reading!
*In absence of Veronica who is on vacation electroal commission consisted of Tom and his two dogs.
As many of you may know from the most recent audio podcast, the video edition of S&L is coming to an end (for now). Huge thanks to Geek & Sundry for making the whole thing possible, for our friends at Pixel Corps for the production and post-production services (and for being awesome in general), and to Fonco Creative for bringing our set (and Lem) to life!
Tom and I are looking into new ways to keep the show alive going forward, so don't fret! We have our hands full right now will getting the anthology off the ground, but we promise you we're working on it.
Thanks for watching!
We've been talking about it for years, but now it's actually going to be a real thing! That's right, we're officially announcing the Sword & Laser Anthology!
We'll be starting open submissions in March, but here's what you need to know:
1. We're looking for unpublished, new material.
2. Genres: science fiction, fantasy, and everything in between.
3. Word count preferably between 1500-7500 (though more or less will not disqualify you).
DON'T SEND US ANYTHING YET! We won't even LOOK at it until we announce the open call. Just start thinking about what you'd like to submit. We wanted to give you some warning, but you'll have time, we promise!
GOOD LUCK and GOOD WRITING!
THURSDAY July 12 (all times Pacific)
FRIDAY July 13 (all Times, spooooky , also, still Pacific)
Good news, everyone! The Sword and Laser Wiki is live!
It's here, it's really here! After months of hard work (and dealing with dragon negotiations) we've finally launched the video show! Check it out below:
We're all giddy about our new video show at Geek and Sundry, but we promise there's more to the episode than just that. Though if you have questions about what the video show means, hopefully loads of them are answered right off the top of the show. We also dig into Lies of Locke Lamora (though we don't wrap it up quite yet) and help save SciFi. Literally.
WHAT ARE WE DRINKING?
Veronica: 2005 Phenom Merlot
BARE YOUR SWORD
Yes we know what the next book will be - and yes we know it's not a laser, but the book after that will be and we need your help picking it!
TV, MOVIES AND VIDEO GAMES
The Lies of Locke Lamora > A Protagonist in Need of a Want?
The Lies of Locke Lamora > Why isn't there a map?
I had the honor of getting to see Tom and Veronica at the WonderCon signing this Saturday. Tom gave me a shirt and I thought it was just an XL when he gave it to me, but was elated to see it was an XXXL when I checked it later. I'm so used to free giveaways being so small on me and most people overlook us big boys. I'm a big fan of all that you and I can't thank you enough.
Literally a Big Fan,
Tom and Veronica,
I'm very excited about your video podcast, and all teh geek and sundry goodness coming. But I have one concern: Is there a 'what we're drinking' section? If there is no drinking to begin the show, it can't really be an S&L podcast, can it?
Keep up the good work.

So Tom and I are looking for someone in the community to lend a helping hand around the farm. We'd like to hire (YES, HIRE) a production assistant to help us with guest booking, asset gathering, event coordination, and other tasks.
We need someone who is extremely detail oriented, available around eight hours a week, and obviously has a love of science fiction and fantasy!
You don't need to be local to SF, though it would be easier if you were in a timezone that lent itself well to collaboration.
Please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org with the subject line "Production assistant." This will be a paying gig, though we cannot shower you in gold (sorry).
Serious inquiries only, and don't fret if we don't get back to you immediately!
