Ruth:
Well, I think we’ve agreed that Veronica and I will meet at WorldCon in Dublin in 2029, she’ll buy me a drink, and then we’ll fight to the death.
Gives me four years to learn the blade…
Ruth (tilltab) Ashworth
I will judge the winner, naturally!
As in, “This one looks the deadest. This one is only mostly dead.”
Stephen:
I loved The Devils, but I am a big Joe Abercrombie fan. I read The Devils when it first came out and I re-read it again because I enjoyed it so much. It has so many nice touches.
CountZeroOr:
I've been looking up some stuff for Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire for a personal project, and ended up finding some of the commercials that aired on TV for the novel on YouTube, which reminded me of the fact that I remember seeing commercials for some of the Dark Tower novels on TV at the time as well – anyone else remember this era of the 90s when novels would get TV ads?

John Taloni:
Posting as I go, now at the 10% mark.
MAN this book starts hard! For peeps further on, does it get any... lighter?
Bill:
Lighter? Not really. In a different way? Yes.
Steve:
On the other hand, I found myself struggling with this book, though I suspect much of that was due to experiencing it as an audiobook. As someone unfamiliar with the pronunciation of Chinese names and terms, I quickly became disoriented – unsure of who was who or where the story was taking place. This confusion made it hard to connect with the characters, many of whom I found difficult to empathize with, or simply unlikeable.
That said, I don’t mean this as a criticism of the book itself, but rather a word of caution: some readers may have a smoother experience with the print version than the audio.
Goodreads Discussion Thread
Katie asked on Goodreads about any readable histories to make her more familiar with the era in the book. And Stephen responded with:
For $4.99 you can get Beginner’s Guide to the Ming Dynasty: A Clear and Engaging Introduction to Imperial China’s Most Powerful Era: Explore the Rise, Glory, and Fall of ... Readers. It is 80 pages so it is a drive-by but should give you the highlights.
